Cordish Cos. teams with Eldorado Resorts for South Florida entertainment district

Baltimore's Cordish Cos. continues its push into the Florida market with a plan to partner in a 223-acre mixed-use entertainment resort just north of Fort Lauderdale.

Chairman David Cordish said Friday his company will work with Eldorado Resorts Inc. to create a master plan and design for the development of a "new world-class, mixed-use entertainment and hospitality destination" in Pompano Beach adjacent to the existing Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park. The expansion would be located on a swath of undeveloped land near the casino, close to Interstate 95 and about 40 miles from Miami.

In a statement Friday, Cordish said he plans to closely monitor the new project.

"I plan personally to spend significant time on the ground working to bring the development to fruition,” he said.

Cordish Cos. also said last week it had signed a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars to build what could be a $2 billion development near EverBank Field on the St. Johns River in North Florida.

That area today holds expansive parking lots and plans call for the project to be built in phases with an entertainment district, a convention center or expo hall, hotels, a parking facility for 3,000 vehicles and a renovated marina. Residential units could be added.

The Pompano Beach project would be built around the existing Isle casino and race track park, dubbed the "winter capital of harness racing."

No renderings were available, but an early concept calls for dining, retail and entertainment venues to be key parts of the expansion. The project will also hold a corporate office campus, residential units and a hotel.

Cordish has also developed two Seminole Tribe casinos in Hollywood and Tampa, Florida.
