Baltimore Business Journal unveils 2021 CEO of the Year and Power 10 Award honorees
David Cordish's smile was wide and his handshake firm as he welcomed visitors to his new Sports & Social sports bar this April at the Live Casino & Hotel.
A pandemic and a casino that was forced to shut down for a few months weren't stopping him from moving ahead with plans to create a spot — complete with lots of giant TVs — where people could gamble when sports betting finally gets underway in Maryland.
The new sports bar is just one of the many projects Cordish, the chairman and CEO of the Cordish Cos., has completed or is working on across the nation. His latest casino venture, Live Casino & Hotel Philadelphia, held its grand opening in February.
Cordish's impact on Greater Baltimore over the years and his continued dominance in the development and casino industry has earned him the BBJ's CEO of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021. The honor in the past three years has been bestowed upon Donald P. Hutchinson, former CEO of the Maryland Zoo, Edward St. John, founder of St. John Properties Inc. and Eddie C. Brown, chairman of Brown Capital Management.
Cordish is joined by an elite group of honorees — the BBJ's Power 10.
Cordish and the fourth annual Power 10 honorees were chosen by the editorial staff from more than 100 nominations based on their impact on Greater Baltimore's business community. These are the men and women you want keynoting your event, sitting on your board and chairing your nonprofit's gala. They're familiar names who earned that recognition through hard work and success.
Cordish and the Power 10 honorees will be celebrated at an invite-only reception on Sept. 14 at The Center Club and in a special issue of the Baltimore Business Journal on Sept. 17. A virtual broadcast will air on Sept. 16 at 10 a.m.
