Governor O’Malley, County Executive John Leopold & David Cordish Gather With State and County Representatives to Celebrate the Launch of the State's Largest Gaming/Entertainment Facility
HANOVER, MD (January 27, 2011) – Joined by Governor Martin O’Malley, Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold and Maryland State and Anne Arundel County representatives and business leaders, The Cordish Company gathered today to celebrate the ground breaking of its Maryland Live! Casino at Arundel Mills. The occasion marks the commencement of construction for the long-awaited gaming and entertainment destination, which was overwhelmingly approved by Anne Arundel County voters in last November’s election.
"We are honored and thrilled to be here today,” said Cordish Company Chairman David Cordish, “We’re excited to create a world-class destination for Maryland residents and visitors and deliver on the promise to provide thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars each year to fund education and other important needs in our State."
Maryland Live! will be the largest and highest revenue generating gaming facility in Maryland, featuring 4,750 of the latest slot and electric table games (including black jack, roulette, craps and poker). The approximately 300,000 square foot facility will also feature multiple upscale dining establishments and an intimate live music venue. Five nationally-acclaimed restaurants and entertainment venues have already attached their name to the project, including Bobby Flay, The Cheesecake Factory and Ruth’s Chris Steak House, and Maryland favorites Obrycki’s Seafood and live music venue Rams Head .
“Two years ago, the voters of Maryland overwhelmingly approved five slots locations and today’s groundbreaking is an enormous step forward to fulfilling that promise,” said Governor O’Malley. “This facility will create thousands of jobs and generate hundreds of millions for our schools, as the largest gaming facility in Maryland.”
The casino will enhance the Arundel Mills Commercial District, already the #1 tourist destination in Maryland, attracting over 14 million people per year. The Arundel Mills commercial district currently offers 3 million square feet of retail, entertainment and commercial space and 1,200 hotel rooms. Located halfway between Baltimore and Washington D.C., Maryland Live! will tap into one of the densest regional markets in the U.S.
Maryland Live! will be constructed by the Commercial Interiors/TN Ward Joint Venture. The Joint Venture is majority owned by the Anne Arundel County-based Commercial Interiors and is the only Gaming Facility in the State to be built by a Maryland Minority-Owned Business Enterprise. The Cordish Company is committed to maximizing opportunities on the project for Maryland-based companies and Minority and Women-Owned businesses.
